PRE-REQUISITES

Attendance on this program is open to delegates who are in possession of a valid BOSIET with EBS, BOSIET with CA-EBS, TBOSIET, FOET with EBS, FOET with CA-EBS or TFOET certificate.

LEARNING OUTCOME

The learning outcomes for Initial Training are specified below:

To successfully complete the Initial Training Program, delegates must be able to explain:

  • Typical emergency response arrangements offshore
  • The role of the Offshore Lifeboat Coxswain and how to be prepared for emergencies
  • Operation of the davits and the brake; common faults and potential solutions
  • The launching and release mechanisms of the TEMPSC
  • Continual assessment of TEMPSC readiness
  • How to brief passengers in an emergency
  • The different types and uses of PPE
  • Characteristics of mechanical restraints
  • Suspension systems on the TEMPSC and how to maintain stability of the craft on the hooks (for single and twin fall only)
  • Communications methods and equipment
  • How weather and sea state conditions affect the launch of the TEMPSC
  • Hazards that may occur in boarding the craft and in launching the craft
  • How to determine a ‘safe area’
  • Degrees on a compass and steering towards a specific heading
  • How weather and sea state conditions affect the path and holding pattern of the TEMPSC
  • Maintaining communications between all parties involved in the emergency
  • How weather and sea state conditions affect the transfer of personnel
  • How to keep injured personnel comfortable and affect their transfer
  • Further evacuation procedures and how to assist

To successfully complete the Initial Training Program, delegates must able to demonstrate:

  • How to check the external and internal integrity of the safety craft
  • How to remove mechanical restraints to enable launch of the TEMPSC
  • How to start the engine using both primary and secondary start systems
  • How to board passengers efficiently and safely
  • How to confirm the launch area is clear
  • How to brief the crew and obtain permission to launch
  • How to release the Lowering/launching mechanism
  • Securing the hatches and turning on the air and water spray protection systems
  • Clearing the installation on course for a safe area
  • Pacing alongside a vessel for transfer of personnel
  • Correct use of the sea anchor
  • Man-overboard procedures if any personnel are in the water
  • How to maintain the safety of the TEMPSC passengers
  • How to tow another vessel
  • How to be towed by another vessel
  • Emergency steering procedures
  • The order for disembarkation and how to get passengers to the rescue craft

The aim of the Initial Training Program is to equip delegates with the knowledge and skills required to perform the role of an Offshore Lifeboat Coxswain effectively.

The objectives are:

  • Delegates to fully understand the roles and responsibilities of the Offshore Lifeboat Coxswain
  • Delegates to understand the working mechanisms of the TEMPSC, and how to safely launch and maneuver the TEMPSC to a safe area.
  • Delegates to ensure that the safety of the passengers is maintained throughout.
  • This program is designed to meet the initial training and assessment requirements for Offshore Lifeboat Coxswains in the oil and gas industry.
