Personal Survival Techniques

PRE-REQUISITES

All delegates must be in possession of a valid document as listed:

  • Valid seafarer medical certificate issued by an approved medical practitioner.
  • Valid seafarer identity document; AND
  • Be not less than 18 years of age

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • This course covers the requirement of international convention STCW 1978 as amended and Code (Manila amendments 2010) Chapter VI, Section A-VI/1 and Table A-VI/1-1 The Liberian Registry requirements on meeting the minimum standard of competence in personal survival techniques, delegates will be able to survive at sea in the event of ship abandonment

LEARNING OUTCOMES

To successfully complete this training delegates must competence included knowledge, understanding, proficiency and demonstrating as the following:

  • How to don a lifejacket.
  • How to don and use an immersion suit.
  • How to safely jump from a height into the water.
  • How to upright an inverted life raft while wearing a lifejacket.
  • How to swim while wearing a lifejacket.
  • Keeping afloat without a lifejacket.
  • Boarding a survival craft from ship and water while wearing a lifejacket.
  • Taking initial actions on boarding survival craft to enhance chance of survival.
  • Streaming a drogue or sea anchor.
  • Operating survival craft equipment.
  • Operating location devices, including radio equipment.
  • This course is suitable for all seagoing personnel employed or engaged onboard vessel as part of the mandatory STCW requirements.
